"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Several high-profile fans have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to make music."

"So everyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics follow breakups and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence required a new sound – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Humor

The trio's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

But Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
